The right lighting isn't just about choosing a beautiful fixture – the appropriate brightness is crucial. But how much light does a room actually need? Many people still refer to wattage, although this is hardly meaningful for modern LED lights anymore.
Today, the most important unit for light quantity is Lumen (lm). This value describes how much light a lamp or fixture actually emits.
What does Lumen mean?
Lumen indicates the luminous flux of a fixture. The higher the lumen value, the more light is produced.
For comparison:
- A classic 60-watt incandescent bulb produced approximately 700–800 lumens.
- A modern LED requires only a few watts to achieve the same brightness much more efficiently.
Therefore, when planning lighting, one should not ask: "How many watts do I need?", but rather: "How many lumens do I need for my room?"
The right brightness depends on the room
Not every room requires the same amount of light. A cozy living room needs a different illuminance than a kitchen or a workspace.
As a guide, you can calculate with the following values:

Example: How many lumens does a living room need?
A living room with 25 m² should be pleasantly lit.
Calculation:
25 m² × 150 lumens = 3,750 lumens
This means: The total lighting in the room should reach approximately 3,750 lumens.
This amount of light does not necessarily have to come from a single lamp. Good planning distributes the light among several sources:
- Ceiling lighting for basic brightness
- Floor or table lamps for cozy areas
- Indirect lighting for atmosphere
- Accent lighting for furniture or architecture
Why multiple light sources are better
A single bright lamp in the middle of the room often creates an uncomfortable and flat illumination. Professional lighting design therefore relies on different lighting zones.
A combination of general, accent, and task lighting creates:
- more comfort
- better orientation
- fewer shadows
- a more pleasant atmosphere
Especially with LED systems, different light intensities can be flexibly combined and dimmed.
Lumen alone does not determine good light
The amount of light is important – but not the only factor.
For a high-quality lighting concept, the following properties also play a role:
Color temperature (Kelvin):
- 2700 K for warm, cozy living light
- 3000 K for modern and neutral living light
- 4000 K for concentrated work and functional areas
Color rendering (CRI): A high CRI value ensures that colors appear natural and realistic.
Glare: A light fixture can be very bright and still feel unpleasant if the light is not properly distributed.
Common mistakes in lighting planning
Many rooms are either too dark or incorrectly lit. Typical mistakes include:
- planning only a central ceiling light
- underestimating the required lumens
- not separately illuminating work areas
- only focusing on wattage
- not providing dimmability
Conclusion: The right lumen count makes the difference
The optimal amount of light depends on the room's use. While cozy basic lighting is sufficient in the living room, kitchens, bathrooms, and work areas require significantly more light.
A good rule of thumb:
The more demanding the activity in the room, the higher the required lumen count should be.
